Highland Road over Kjölur

Booking request

The Kjölur plateau lies 600-700 meters (approx 2000 feet) above sea level. This highland is rugged terrain, lavafields and untouched nature. The area is closed for tourists 9 months of the year and is only accessible for people with enough experience and training. The harsh weather conditions during winter covers this land with a thick layer of ice and snow. Along the route you can find several natural wonders, hiking trails and gravel roads. The whole area, without exception is highly sensitive and requires caution from everyone traveling in the Highlands. All vehicles need to stay on the road.

ARRIVAL - BLUE LAGOON – REYKJAVIK

Reykjavik - Hermann Gudmundsson

Fly to Iceland and collect your rental car on arrival at Keflavik International Airport. Dive into the geothermal waters of the Blue Lagoon before heading south to your first accommodation. A visit to the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa could be a good start on your stay in Iceland. Guests renew their relationship with nature, soak up the scenic beauty and enjoy breathing the clean, fresh air while relaxing in the warm geothermal seawater. Please note that admission to the Blue Lagoon needs to be booked ahead, and entrance is not included in this offer. On the roundtrip in Iceland, you will also find other geothermal pools to visit. First night in Reykjavik.

THE GOLDEN CIRCLE

Gullfoss

Drive to the World Heritage Site of Thingvellir National Park. This is the location of Iceland‘s original parliament. Enjoy views across the clear waters of Lake Thingvallavatn. Visit the thundering Gullfoss waterfall and famous Geysir geothermal area, where the geyser of Strokkur regularly erupts and numerous other hot springs bubble and steam. Nearby Geysir area, we can recommend stop at the farm Efstidalur (about 10 minutes’ drive from Laugarvatn area, between Thingvellir and Geysir). Here you can enjoy a nice dinner or just have a taste of homemade ice cream. Nearby Geysir, you will also find the natural pool Secret Lagoon. Accommodation one night in the area.

HIGHLAND ROAD OVER KJÖLUR TO SKAGAFJÖRDUR

Highlands

From Geysir we continue to the highlands. The road begins near Haukadalur and behind the Gullfoss waterfall, ending in the north near Blönduós. The road traverses the interior between two glaciers, Langjökull and Hofsjökull. It is the second longest of the roads through the Highlands of Iceland and takes about 5 hours to traverse by car. You will past Hveravellir, a bubbling and churning geothermal area and make sure to stop for a refreshing dip in the hot spring. From the highland road, you will reach the Skagafjörður region in the north-west of Iceland. The Skagafjörður area features a number of intriguing sights. This region is particularly famous for breeding the world-renowned Icelandic horses. Nearby is Saudakrokur and the fascinating folk museum at Glaumbær. There are possibilities for horseback riding on Iceland horse, hiking tours and if you want more excitement, there is river rafting. In Víðidalur near Hvammstangi, you will find the beautiful Kolugljúfur canyon with its stunning waterfall Kolufossar. In this area, you will also find the amazing cliff Hvítserkur on the Vatnsnes Peninsula. Accommodation in Skagafjörður area.

SKAGAFJORD-HOLMAVIK/DRANGSNES

Westfjords

You will now head towards the mountains and fjords of the West fjords. Visiting the West fjords is surely a different experience. It is Iceland, but yet a different Iceland altogether. The peninsula West fjords only has about 7.000 inhabitants and is around 22 km2 of size, so even with growing numbers of visitors there is still plenty of space for everyone. The nature is beautiful, with high cliffs and red sandy beaches and you will have plenty of hiking options on the way. Take a dip into the small Hot Pots at the seashore while you are in Drangsnes. For an ultimate experience, take about 2-hour drive to norðurfjörður. Norðurfjörður is a part of Árneshreppur and the least populous municipality in Iceland, with only 53 inhabitants. Make sure you visit the geothermal pool at Krossnes on Strandir, located a bit north of the fjord near the Arctic Circle. The pool is one of Iceland's most interesting and unique destinations. It is a very peaceful and relaxing area with beautiful landscape.

ISAFJORDUR

Sheeps

Today you will be driving through some of the 8 fjords of Ísafjarðardjúp and it truly puts the “fjords” in your West fjords adventure. Each a true fjord in its own right, with plenty to see and explore. A beautiful coastline, rich in bird life and look out for seals at the seaside as well as the views to Drangjökull Glacier. You will find hot springs at Hörgshlíð and Heydalur on the way. Enjoy the beautiful capital of the West fjords in the afternoon, which has exciting culture life and welcoming people. Visit some museums, such as The West fjords Heritage Museum and more. Enjoy a nice dinner in the city in the evening and maybe if the weather is nice, linger towards the shady city of Sudureyri for an easy hike in the midnight sun or check out Bolafjall: above the town of Bolungarvík, you might even be lucky enough to glimpse Greenland on a clear day.

FROM NORTH TO THE SOUTH WESTFJORDS

Mountains and Beach

Today we head towards the south of the peninsula. The Viking ‘village’ and working replica Viking ship are great reasons to stop at Thingeyri village. A little bit further up the road you will stumble upon the largest waterfall in the West fjords, Dynjandi. It is one of the most photogenic falls in Iceland, thanks to its unusual triangular cascade. Uninhabited Geirþjófsfjörður is just another beautiful place, but a wonderful secluded spot for hikers of all types and a pilgrimage for those who know the Icelandic saga of Gisli Sursson. In Bíldudalur, we recommend you to visit the Monster Museum and listen to tales of sea monsters, which have played a colorful role in Icelandic folk culture for centuries. Not far from the town of Bíldudalur in Arnarfjörður, it is possible to drive towards Selárdalur where the artist Samuel Jonsson has made a small sculpture park. The hot spring pool, Pollurinn is located in the hillside just outside the village of Tálknafjörður. While bathing you can admire the extraordinary view over the fjord. From Patreksfjörður you will find option for some guided excursions. You will stay for 2 nights in this area.

LATRABJARG – RAUDISANDUR

Lake

Use the whole day in the area of Latrabjarg and Raudisandur. Make sure you stop by the Heritage Museum at the farm Hnjótur you will learn how local people lived in the old days. Latrabjarg is the westernmost point in Europe and up to 440 meters where it is highest point and 14 km long. On a good day, you can see Snæfellsjökul glacier to the south and even Greenland to the north. Latrabjarg is claimed to be the best place in the world to photograph puffins. Latrabjarg was the site of a famous rescue operation in the year 1947 when Icelandic farmers rescued the 12 surviving members of the British trawler Dhoon. From Latrabjarg you head towards one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets, the red colored beach of Raudisandur. The beauty and the stillness in a setting of black cliffs and blue ocean will not leave you untouched. Seals are often seen on the beach sunning with their offspring. In the summer, you will find open Café at Raudisandur. Please note that the roads are mostly gravel on this route.

WESTFJORDS-SNÆFELLSNES

Snaefellsjoekull

Drive towards Brjánslækur harbor where you take the car-ferry across Breiðafjörður bay to Stykkishólmur town in Snæfellsnes peninsula. The ferry ride is about 2,5 hours and will depart mid-day. On this route, you will find option for bathing in hot springs at Krossholt by Birkimelur and Hellulaug by Flókalundur. Take a quiet evening in the beautiful town of Stykkishólmur with its well-preserved old houses in the town centre.

SNÆFELLSNES- BORGARFJORDUR

snaefellsjoekull - Hermann Gudmundsson

Today you will experience the wonders of Snæfellsnes peninsula. Snæfellsnes peninsula has some of the country's most famous natural and historical landmarks. You will drive past one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland, Kirkjufell by the town of Grundarfjörður. In the westernmost part of the peninsula is the crown jewel Snæfellsjökul glacier, as in Jules Verne’s 'journey to the interior of the earth' is the starting point for a journey into the unknown. Some of the highlights of the peninsula are underground cave Vatnshellir, the landmarks of Hellnar, Arnarstapi and black pebble beach in Dritvik. The beautiful yellow sandy beaches below the glacier will not pass you by. Make sure to stop at Búðir where you find a lovely little church. From Snæfellsnes we head towards Borgarfjördur area for a night stay.

BORGARFJORDUR - REYKJAVIK

Harpa Concert Hall

Start your day driving to Reykholt. The place of Snorri Sturluson, Icelandic author and poet who lived in Reykholt in the 1200's. He is most famous as a writer of Heimskringla, Norse Kings Sagas. Nearby Reykholt, you will find Húsafell. Here you have the opportunity to join a tour to Langjökull glacier and into a manmade cave on the glacier. Just by Húsafell, you will also find the beautiful waterfalls Barnafossar and Hraunfossar. It is possible to stop at Deildartunguhver, Europe's largest geometric hot water source. It produces 150 liters of boiling water per second! The steaming water testifies to the inner forces of the earth. You will find Krauma Spa by Deildartunguhver. In the afternoon, you arrive in Reykjavik, where the journey ends. Take a stroll in the old city, with the small colorful houses, shops, galleries and cafes. There are options for city sightseeing excursions and boat-tours from the city harbor, as well as guided walk tours with both food and beer tasting on the way. Visit the beautiful concert house Harpa by the harbor. Reykjavik has many outdoor swimming pools, open from early morning to late evening and a good way to ease the body after a long drive. Laugavegur shopping-street is worth visiting, and you will find the big shopping center Kringlan near by the city center. Enjoy your last evening in the city.
